M1886 XC Carbine, SN334692

M1886 XC Carbine, SN334692

These carbines were assembled at Springfield and issued to cavalry troops for trial in 1886. In 1889 they were called back to the armory. At some later time, they were cleaned and returned to service. Many of the refubish3ed XC carbines were issued to the Cincinnati Home Guard in WWI. With this carbine, there are no markings or metal plates to confirm the gun went to Cincinnati. The gun has been refinished like those issued to Cincinnati with the firing proof and most of the cartouche missing. It has a keyhole butt plate and a set of repro rods and a headless shell extractor. The carbine is in excellent condition and the bore is minty new with what appears to be a thin flack of metal missing near one land (hard to see). The bore is extremely shiny which means the flaw is not from usage, but occurred when rifled. The carbine has the shoulder on the muzzle which is characterstic or these arms, the early breech block, and bent forward sling swivel.
