1873 Rifle, SN74776
1873 Rifle, SN74776
This Model 1873 rifle is one of the last rifles produced in 1876. It has just the outline of the
cartouche and the circle P is also faint. It is a long wrist stock made for the narrow receiver
and the upper band has the very small "u". The cleaning rod is the third version of the early rod
with a few undulations missing and it is cupped. The butt plate is ribbed and stamped "conn" very
lightly on top. The SRS references mention several M73 rifles in the serial number range (SN74757
and SN73971 as IDed to: Co. E 1st Conn. Vol. Infantry, 1898. It has a dated lock plate, a Type III
hammer, a long wrist stock, M73 sight, and one of the first two piece front sights. The mechanics are
excellent, and the bore is very shiny with a trace of lead along the edge of the rifling.
