Metcalfe Rifle, SN64299

Metcalfe Rifle, SN64299

This Model 1873 rifle has the Metcalfe strap alteration on the stock. The strap retains a wood cartridge box for easy access during a battle. About 1,000 of these rifles were produced in 1876. Today, they are hard to find, especially in nice condition. It is believed that most of the guns were disassembled after testing and only a few are in original configuration. This rifle has all the correct features: small v/p/eagle on the barrel, M73 rear sight held with slotless screws, serial number in the 60,000 range, altered lock plate, Type II hammer, solid front sight, and long wrist stock with ESA in an oval and a circled P firing proof. The front barrel band has the small "u" stamping and the rear band has the larger "U" stamping. This is correct for guns in the 60,000 serial number range since the many of the original lower rifle bands were uses by the cavalry since the carbine stacking band was not found to be satisfactory. A very very collectible piece of military history. NOTE: There is a small chip of wood missing from the tip of the stock. It is shown in the photographs. The bore in this rifle is excellent. The only thing in the bore that can be seen is the nice shiny rifling.
