M84 Type I Cadet Rifle, SN494525

M84 Type I Cadet Rifle, SN494525

This is a very nice cadet rifle which is essentially new with a pristine barrel and bore. It appears unfired. The stock appears to be a field replacement, but it has an "L" firng proof like an M68. This is the second or third cadet rifle we have recently found with this unusual firng proof. The stock and metal are excellent with some color case on the block and tang, strong bluing, and a stock with only a few storage dings. Note the * SV * stamped into the wrist of the stock. Here is what the stamping represents: (From Phil Powers) SV stood for the Sons of Veterans of the USA. The SV was formed in 1881 from the defunct GAR (Grand Army of the Republic formed in 1866). The SV existed until a name change was made in 1925 to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) which exists to this day. This fraternal organization is made up of 26 Departments, each Department representing one or more states. An attached photo taken in 1905 shows a group of SV members holding what appears to be trapdoor Springfields. I do not have the photo here, but the banner on the photo is "Cannonsburg's Paxton Camp. Sons of the Veterans of the Civil War. 1905" ( I have a copy of the photo if the buyer is interested) The stock does not have a circled P firing proof, but a large L firing proof like the M68 rifles. The cadet rifle appears to have seen VERY little service. The stock has not been sanded or refinished, and the "L" is large and deep.
