Metcalfe Rifle and Blocks
Metcalfe rifle and Blocks
This Metcalfe rifle has one of the original take-off stocks that Springfield made.
It has the clear and sharp ESA and circled P firing proof. The barrel has lots of
blue and the hardware is correct for this rare rifle. The M73 sight is mounted with
slotless screws, the lower band has the medium sized U and the upper band has the small U.
The barrel proofs are small (v/p/eagle) which is corredt. The front sight is solid, and
the breech block has the early stamping. The lock has the 1873 date and the hammer
has the coarse knurling. The N.J. on the barrel is the only detactor. The two blocks
that come with the rifle are: (1) the block used for demonstration which is empty and made
of hard wood; (2)the other block is the original 1875/1876 dated block with is sealed
and made of bass wood or poplar wood. The sealed box is covered with thin platic to
protect the fragile paper coating. the lettering on the box is very clear and readable.
The box is not damaged and the plastic is to insure it does not get damaged.
These sealed boxes are very hard to find.
