Model 1888 Rifle
MODEL 1888 RIFLE SN 130743. This is a very nice trapdoor with its
barrel turning brown. The stock on the gun has very few dings and has not
been refinished or
sanded. The Number 14 is on the side of the butt stock and the number 57
is at the top of the wrist. From the condition of the bore and the
exterior, I would think the gun had not been issued and just received a
few storage dings in the last 100+ years. The stock is cartouched 1891
and has a strong circled P and R.D.R. stock inspector's stamps.
The breech block retains some of its color case both inside and out.
The 1891 cartouche is correct for the rifle because it is one of the
many rifles fabricated from earlier rifles in 1891. 1891 was the
year when Springfield produced most of the new M88s using older
parts. The bore is pristine with deep sharp rifling.
